The TYPO3 Association

Ensuring the sustainability of the TYPO3 Project

The not-for-profit TYPO3 Association was founded to foster the health, value, and sustainability of the TYPO3 Project. The membership organization plays an important role in funding and setting the long-term strategy of the TYPO3 project.

Our role

By members, for the community

Guidance from people who care

The TYPO3 Association’s main activities include funding the development of the TYPO3 software, providing a platform for the TYPO3 community to share knowledge and resources, and promoting the use of TYPO3 around the world.

Institutional Support

In 2016, the TYPO3 Association founded TYPO3 GmbH (colloquially “The TYPO3 Company”), a fully-owned service company providing support and services. The company also facilitates the development of the CMS. To ensure the health of the community, the company won’t offer agency services, such as creating websites.

The official legal body of TYPO3

The TYPO3 Association is the legal not-for-profit body representing the TYPO3 Project. We uphold the software’s GNU General Public License (GPL) and the TYPO3 trademark in the interest of the TYPO3 community. To protect the brand, we also decide how and where the TYPO3 trademark can be used.

Organizing TYPO3 Events and Initiatives

Together with the TYPO3 Company (TYPO3 GmbH), we organize events to inform about TYPO3 and expand the professional expertise in our community. The Developer Days bring together TYPO3 professionals to share knowledge, build skills, and learn about innovations and best practices. T3CON is the event where clients, freelancers, and agencies earn from industry experts, network, and create new business opportunities together.

How we make decisions

A consensus-driven process

The TYPO3 Association Board delegates most day-to-day decision-making and development to Teams, Committees, and Initiatives. These groups make decisions in line with the TYPO3 Association’s long-term strategy. When decisions affect multiple groups, they are raised to the joint Team Leader Meeting or the Association Board.

Types of groups

  • Official Teams are initiated by the community and have long-term responsibility for a defined area
  • Committees are similar to teams, but are established by the TYPO3 Association Board
  • The Team Leader Group is a body made up of leaders from Teams and Committees and chaired by a TYPO3 Association Board member
  • Initiatives are formed to organize long-term progress towards a goal (and are dissolved once the goal has been reached)

Our history

TYPO3 CMS was created by Danish developer, Kasper Skårhøj, in 1997. He released TYPO3 under an open source license and created its extension architecture. When he decided to move on in 2004, the TYPO3 Association was created to take over leadership of the Project on behalf of the community. Today, the TYPO3 Association is based in Sissach, Switzerland.

Our structure and governance model

The TYPO3 Association has a consensus-driven governance model. The roughly 1100 members elect the Association’s Board at the annual General Assembly. The community is self-organized into teams and initiatives that further the TYPO3 project’s goals.
